Green Water Tanker in Hyderabad: how to book treated water, what it costs, and what it is not for
Last checked: 2 Nov 2026, 10:15 AM IST
Next update: when HMWSSB publishes its own booking page, app option or tariff, or expands the service beyond the first phase.
In short
On Sunday 1 November 2026, Hyderabad's water board (HMWSSB) started supplying treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants (STPs) in green-painted tankers marked "Strictly for non-domestic use and not for drinking" (The Hindu, 1 Nov 2026). It is meant for construction and curing, landscaping, gardens, parks and industry, so that drinking water is kept for homes (The Hindu; Deccan Chronicle, 1 Nov 2026). Government departments, parks and green spaces get priority in the first phase, then construction, industry and other non-drinking users (Deccan Chronicle). Telugu news outlets report booking on 155313 and a starting charge of ₹400 for 5,000 litres within 4 km (TV9 Telugu, 1 Nov 2026; 10TV, 1 Nov 2026). Never drink it, cook with it, bathe in it or pour it into your home's drinking-water sump or overhead tank.

Reported charges
These are as reported by three Telugu outlets on 1 Nov 2026 (TV9 Telugu; 10TV; Vaartha). We have not found them on an HMWSSB page yet. Confirm the price when you book.
| Tanker size | First 4 km | Each extra km |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 litres | ₹400 | ₹55 |
| 10,000 litres | ₹800 | ₹65 |
| 20,000 litres | ₹1,600 | ₹80 |
Worked example (reported rates): a 10,000-litre tanker going 7 km would be ₹800 + (3 × ₹65) = ₹995.
Why "delivery" charges? HMWSSB officials said on 28 Oct that treated water from STPs is supplied free of cost, with only transport charges collected (The Hindu, 28 Oct 2026). The outlets above describe these amounts the same way (TV9 Telugu).
How to book (as of 2 Nov)
- Call 155313, HMWSSB's customer care number, and ask for a green (treated water) tanker. 155 313 is the 24-hour number listed on the board's site (HMWSSB); Telugu outlets report it as the booking line for green tankers (TV9 Telugu; 10TV).
- Say what it's for (curing, garden, landscaping, construction) and give the delivery address, so they can match you to a nearby STP.
- Ask the price for your tanker size and distance before confirming.
- Using the app: Deccan Chronicle reports booking through the HMWSSB mobile app (Deccan Chronicle). The official "HMWSSB Citizen Services" app on Google Play lists "Book a Water Tanker", but its description (last updated 4 Jul 2026) doesn't mention treated-water tankers (Google Play listing). If you don't see a green-tanker option, use the phone line.
Is it for households? The reports talk about government offices, parks, builders, industry, swimming pools and building curing (Deccan Chronicle; TV9 Telugu). None says whether an individual home can book one for a garden. Ask on 155313.
What it is for, and what it is not for
| OK (non-drinking uses named in reports) | Not OK |
|---|---|
| Curing concrete and other construction work | Drinking, cooking, making tea or ice |
| Landscaping, gardens, parks, green belts | Bathing, washing utensils or vegetables |
| Industrial uses that don't need drinking-quality water | Filling the sump or overhead tank your home's taps draw from |
| Swimming pools (named by Telugu outlets; check with HMWSSB) | Anything a child might drink from |

If your building uses it: keep it in a separate, labelled tank with its own pipes and outlets, away from drinking-water storage. Never connect it to drinking-water lines. For drinking-water tankers, see Tanker water safety.
Why the city is doing this
- Hyderabad's lake reservoirs are low after a very dry October. The board expects a large Singur–Manjeera shortfall next year (a projection, not a supply cut). See Hyderabad water supply: what's confirmed.
- The Chief Minister's Foundation Day message asked government departments, industries, builders and commercial establishments to use treated wastewater for landscaping, construction and industrial needs, citing El Niño conditions (The Hindu, 1 Nov 2026).
- One example given at the launch: the Secretariat uses 250 kilolitres of drinking water a day, 50 of them for non-drinking needs. A pipeline from a 20 MLD STP is to supply that instead (The Hindu).
Before you book: three checks
- Is the tanker green and labelled "not for drinking" / "STP treated water"? The board directed that all green tankers carry this caution (The Hindu, 31 Oct 2026).
- Is the price what you were quoted? Note the tanker number and the receipt.
- Is it going into the right tank? Don't let it go into the drinking-water sump.

What you can do

- Never put green tanker water into a drinking-water sump. Keep it in a separate, labelled tank if your site uses both.
- Share this page with your RWA or site supervisor so everyone knows it is STP water, not drinking water.
- Share this with your building or site group
