Hyderabad water supply: what's confirmed, and what's only proposed
Last checked: 23 Oct 2026, 10:30 AM IST
Next update: when HMWSSB announces any change to supply days, or when the Dial-a-Green Tanker service goes live (planned 1 Nov 2026).
In short
As of 23 October 2026, Hyderabad's water board (HMWSSB) has not announced any switch from the current alternate-day supply to once every three days. That idea has been reported as a possible contingency if reservoir levels fall further (New Indian Express, 22 Oct 2026). Two things are firmer: a proposal to cut Manjeera supply by 10 MGD from December (Telangana Today, 18 Oct 2026), and a treated-water "Green Tanker" service for construction and landscaping from 1 November (Telangana Today, 16 Oct 2026; New Indian Express, 20 Oct 2026).
Confirmed, proposed, or rumour? (as of 23 Oct 2026)
| Claim you may have seen | Status | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| "Water only once every 3 days" | Not announced. Reported as a contingency. | HMWSSB is "considering a shift from alternate-day supplies to once every three days if reservoir levels fall further" (NIE, 22 Oct 2026). |
| "Manjeera supply cut from December" | Proposal | An official told Telangana Today there is "a proposal to reduce supply by 10 MGD from the Manjeera source" from December (Telangana Today, 18 Oct 2026). |
| "Green Tanker / treated water from 1 Nov" | Announced by HMWSSB | Dial-a-Green Tanker service to launch 1 Nov 2026 for construction, industries and landscaping (Telangana Today, 16 Oct 2026). NIE reports treated wastewater use becomes mandatory for construction and landscaping from 1 Nov (NIE, 20 Oct 2026). |
| "Reservoirs will run dry by end of November" | False, per HMWSSB | HMWSSB said a viral message making this claim was not issued by it, and asked people not to forward such messages without checking (Deccan Chronicle, 13 Oct 2026). |
| "Homes told to cut water use by 20%" | Official appeal | Covered on our page: The 20% challenge. |
Why supply is under pressure
- Very little October rain. Hyderabad got 2.8 mm from 1 to 21 October 2026, against an October normal of about 114 mm; Telangana as a whole was 95% short for the period (Times of India, 22 Oct 2026).
- Low local reservoirs. Singur (capacity 29.917 tmcft) holds just over 3 tmcft, against more than 16 tmcft a year ago. Manjira holds about 0.250 tmcft of its 1.500 tmcft capacity (NIE, 22 Oct 2026).
- No inflows this year. HMWSSB's Managing Director said there had been no inflows into Manjeera and Singur this year, and the water available would last only until December. Alternatives being examined include more Godavari and Krishna water and extra filter beds at Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar (The Hindu, 17 Oct 2026).
- Tanker demand has doubled. Daily tanker bookings are 6,000–7,000, against 3,000–3,500 at the same time last year (NIE, 22 Oct 2026).

Which areas get Manjeera water?
If the proposed 10 MGD Manjeera cut goes ahead, these are the areas Telangana Today lists as served by the Manjeera network (Telangana Today, 18 Oct 2026). The report does not say how a cut would be shared between them.
| Belt | Localities named in the report |
|---|---|
| North-west | Kukatpally, KPHB Colony, Pragathi Nagar, Miyapur, Hyder Nagar, Gangaram, Madinaguda, Chanda Nagar |
| Central and western | Erragadda, SR Nagar, Ameerpet, Sanath Nagar, Moosapet, parts of Begumpet |
| Industrial / ORR belt | Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, Lingampally, Beeramguda, Ameenpur |
| Secunderabad and north | Secunderabad Cantonment, Ferozguda, Bowenpally, Hasmathpet, Alwal |
The same report says HMWSSB has advised resident welfare associations and large institutions not to depend only on board supply, and to use alternatives such as rainwater harvesting (Telangana Today, 18 Oct 2026).
Dial-a-Green Tanker: what we know so far
"Green Tanker" water is treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants (STPs). It is for non-drinking uses only.
- Start date: 1 November 2026 (Telangana Today, 16 Oct 2026).
- Who it's for: construction sites, industries, parks, green belts, landscaping, road cleaning and dust control (Telangana Today, 16 Oct 2026; Deccan Chronicle, 23 Oct 2026).
- Target: 100 million litres a day (MLD) in the first phase (The Hindu, 17 Oct 2026).
- Booking: a digital platform is being built to register suppliers, tanker operators and users, match demand with nearby STPs, and allow online booking and tracking (Telangana Today, 16 Oct 2026). As of 23 Oct, we have not found an official booking link, phone number or tariff. Use only links published by HMWSSB.
- Filling stations: 13 treated-water filling stations identified, 3–4 working as of mid-October, with all 13 targeted by 1 Nov and about 20 more planned (The Hindu, 17 Oct 2026).
- Gated communities: apartments with their own STPs can register to supply surplus treated water. 51 private STPs had registered, offering about 1.5 MLD (The Hindu, 17 Oct 2026).
- Quality checks: HMWSSB's MD has directed that treated-water test results at filling stations be uploaded online, with tests in coordination with the Pollution Control Board (Deccan Chronicle, 23 Oct 2026).
- Enforcement: NIE reports HYDRAA will inspect construction sites to curb overuse of drinking water and groundwater (NIE, 20 Oct 2026).
Is Green Tanker water safe to drink? No. It is treated sewage meant for construction, gardens and similar uses. Do not drink it, cook with it or store it in your drinking-water tank.
What you can do this week
- Check before you forward. Look for the message on HMWSSB's official website or social channels before sharing it in a building group (Deccan Chronicle, 13 Oct 2026).
- Plan for an alternate-day schedule continuing. Keep enough covered storage for your supply gap, and see Tanker water safety if you buy tankers.
- Cut use by a fifth. The board's tips are on The 20% challenge.
- If your building has an STP, ask your RWA whether it can register surplus treated water with HMWSSB (The Hindu, 17 Oct 2026).
- If you're building or renovating, expect treated water to be required for construction from 1 Nov (NIE, 20 Oct 2026).
- Board complaints. HMWSSB's own site lists 24-hour Customer Care at 155 313, and landlines 040-23300114 and 040-23433933 (confirmed on hyderabadwater.gov.in, accessed 23 Oct 2026).
Rain outlook (forecast, not a promise)
IMD forecast (not a promise): IMD's 7-day city forecast issued 23 Oct 2026 shows partly cloudy, hazy days, with light rain or drizzle possible on 25 and 28 October and maximum temperatures of 33–35 °C. IMD's Telangana warnings show no warnings from 22 to 28 October (IMD city forecast, accessed 23 Oct 2026; IMD Telangana warnings, issued 22 Oct 2026). Light drizzle does little for reservoirs. Forecasts change; check IMD for the latest.
