NavIC NVS-03: ISRO's GSLV-F18 launch result

GSLV-F18 placed NVS-03 in its intended orbit on 30 October 2026. Here's what ISRO published — and what that does (and does not) mean for phones tonight.

Last checked: 31 Oct 2026

Launch result checked against ISRO's mission page and homepage. Scheduled lift-off time (23:51 IST) is from ISRO's X posts as quoted by The Hindu.

In short

On 30 October 2026, ISRO's GSLV-F18 launched from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, and successfully placed the NVS-03 navigation satellite in its intended orbit — a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) (ISRO mission page; ISRO homepage; ISRO launch list, Oct 30, 2026). Lift-off had been scheduled for 23:51 IST that night (ISRO on X, quoted by The Hindu, 30 Oct 2026). NVS-03 is the third next-generation NavIC / IRNSS navigation satellite; it carries an indigenous atomic clock (plus procured clocks) and adds an L1 signal alongside existing L5/S signals, with coverage over India and about 1,500 km beyond (ISRO mission page; ISRO brochure, 27 Oct 2026).

What happened

ISRO states: "GSLV-F18 has successfully placed NVS-03 in the intended orbit." The vehicle placed NVS-03 into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. The launch was executed from the Second Launch Pad (SLP) at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR. GSLV-F18 was the 20th flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (ISRO mission page; ISRO homepage). ISRO's launch-missions table lists the flight as GSLV-F18/NVS-03 Mission, Oct 30, 2026 (ISRO Launch Missions).

The scheduled lift-off was 30 October 2026, 23:51 hours IST, with live coverage from 23:20 IST, per ISRO's posts on X (The Hindu quoting @isro, 28–30 Oct 2026; The Hindu live updates).

What is NVS-03 / NavIC?

From ISRO's mission page and brochure:

  • NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India's independent regional navigation satellite system for Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) over India and a region extending about 1,500 km beyond the Indian landmass (ISRO brochure; ISRO mission page).
  • NVS-03 is the third satellite in the next-generation navigation series, meant to provide continuity of navigation services for the IRNSS series (ISRO mission page).
  • It carries an indigenous atomic clock along with procured atomic clocks (ISRO mission page).
  • It includes an L1 signal in addition to existing L5/S signals (ISRO mission page).
  • Planned GTO targets in the brochure: perigee 170 km, apogee 37,023 km, inclination 20.75° ± 0.1°, payload mass about 2,250 kg (ISRO brochure). Those brochure figures were the mission plan; ISRO's post-launch statement on the mission page confirms placement in the intended GTO without republishing new numbers here.

Does this change GPS on your phone tonight?

No immediate phone change is stated by ISRO. The mission page says the satellite was placed in a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit — not that consumer devices switched to NavIC overnight (ISRO mission page). Phones that use GPS or multi-constellation chips keep working as before. Any wider use of NavIC L1 in consumer devices depends on constellation commissioning and device support, which ISRO's result notice does not claim happened at lift-off.

FAQ

Did the NVS-03 launch succeed?
Yes, per ISRO: GSLV-F18 successfully placed NVS-03 in the intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit from the Second Launch Pad at SDSC SHAR (ISRO mission page; ISRO homepage).
When did GSLV-F18 lift off?
ISRO scheduled lift-off for 30 October 2026 at 23:51 IST (ISRO on X, quoted by The Hindu). ISRO lists the launch date as Oct 30, 2026.
What is NavIC?
Navigation with Indian Constellation — India's regional PNT system covering India and about 1,500 km beyond, per ISRO.
Will my phone's GPS change because of this launch?
ISRO has not stated any overnight change to consumer GPS. NVS-03 was placed in a transfer orbit; day-to-day phone navigation is unchanged unless your device and the constellation are later used that way.
