Why groundwater dropped in Hyderabad this year
In short. Hyderabad's borewells depend on rain soaking into the ground. This year less of it arrived.

Hyderabad's borewells depend on rain soaking into the ground. This year less of it arrived.
What the data show (news report). The New Indian Express reported on 8 October 2026, citing Telangana Ground Water Department data, that groundwater in the city's Core Urban Region in September 2026 was on average 6.85 metres lower than in September 2025. Levels had risen only 0.42 metres since May, and fell 0.38 metres from August to September.
Less rain. The report says the region received 457 mm of rain against a normal of 619 mm, a 26% shortfall, and 33 of 46 mandals were rain-deficient.
Uneven across the city. Across 107 monitoring wells (piezometers) in 46 mandals, the average depth to water was 11.58 metres. It ranged from 1.35 metres at Miyapur to 47.23 metres at Kukatpally. About 46% of the area had water 10 to 15 metres down, 24% at 15 to 20 metres and 6% deeper than 20 metres.
What it means for you. With the monsoon over and little rain since, borewells may yield less this summer. Fix leaks, reuse water where safe and, if you can, build a rooftop recharge pit before the next monsoon.
We have not yet seen TGWD's own report; we will update this post when it is available.
