Myth: La Niña will come right after El Niño and fix things

In short. Myth: La Niña will arrive right after this El Niño and bring the rain back.

A painted tropical island under heavy rain clouds above a bar chart of NOAA's La Niña chances: 1% for April–June 2027 and 13% for May–July 2027, with neutral most likely. Cards say El Niño is often but not always followed by La Niña, and WMO expects El Niño to peak around December and last through February 2027.

Myth: La Niña will arrive right after this El Niño and bring the rain back.

Fact: a quick switch is unlikely. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center gives La Niña only a 1% chance for April–June 2027 and a 13% chance for May–July 2027. Neutral conditions are the most likely outcome (forecast issued October 2026).

Not a rule. NOAA's Climate.gov explains that El Niño is often, but not always, followed by La Niña, especially after a strong event. It is a tendency, not a promise.

El Niño isn't over yet. The World Meteorological Organization expects this El Niño to peak around December and gives a near-100% chance that it lasts through February 2027 (WMO, 8 Oct 2026). WMO also forecasts drier-than-normal conditions over the Indian subcontinent for October to December.

What it means. Don't count on La Niña next year. In Hyderabad and much of India, the safer plan is to save water now, follow official advisories, and keep checking IMD's seasonal outlooks as they're updated.
