Hyderabad El Niño guide: rain, water and heat on one page

Here is Hyderabad's season so far, using official figures, with what you can do.

Rain. Hyderabad district received 458.5 mm from June to September 2026, against a normal of 627.5 mm: 27% short, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society. October has been even drier: from 1 to 17 October, Telangana got 2.6 mm against a normal of 63.4 mm, 96% below normal, according to IMD.

Water. The Hyderabad water board (HMWSSB) has directed residents not to use hose pipes to wash vehicles, ramps or roads, to use dry sweeping for daily cleaning, and to fix household leaks immediately (as reported by The Hindu on 13 October). At a review meeting on 16 October, the state government asked households to cut water use by at least 20% (The Hindu). For tanker or supply problems, use HMWSSB's official channels.

Rumour check. A message claiming the city's reservoirs "will run dry by November end" was flagged as false by HMWSSB. Check claims against official sources before forwarding.

Heat. The Health Ministry advises staying out of the sun between 12 noon and 3 pm, drinking water even when you are not thirsty, and calling 108 or 102 if someone has a high body temperature and is confused, unconscious or has stopped sweating.
