Electricity demand in a hot El Niño year: what the numbers show
In short. Hot weather and weak rain push electricity demand up: more fans and air conditioners in cities, more pumping on farms.

Hot weather and weak rain push electricity demand up: more fans and air conditioners in cities, more pumping on farms. In a reply to the Lok Sabha on 23 July 2026, the Ministry of Power said directly: "In view of development of El Nino conditions… requirement of electricity has risen significantly."
The numbers the ministry gave.
- India met an all-time high peak demand of 270.8 GW in May 2026.
- Peak demand from April to June was about 12% higher than a year earlier.
- Demand crossed 270 GW twice in July.
- Solar and wind together produced a record 103.7 GW in July (solar 75 GW, wind 28.7 GW).
- Installed capacity stood at 548.86 GW, and coal stock at power plants was 41.4 million tonnes on 18 July, about 13 days' worth.
What the government is doing. Among short-term steps, the ministry listed shifting agricultural load to solar hours and promoting energy efficiency for cooling.
A model estimate, not a measurement. Times of India (14 October) reported a CREA analysis from July 2026 that modelled up to 10 TWh of extra cooling demand. Treat that as an estimate.
What you can do. Efficient fans and air conditioners, sensible thermostat settings and switching off unused appliances help, especially on the hottest afternoons and evenings. In Hyderabad, the Telangana government has asked households to save electricity as well as water this season.
