El Niño explained in one picture
In short. El Niño is a natural pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean that usually returns every two to seven years.

El Niño is a natural pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean that usually returns every two to seven years. Right now one is under way: NOAA's status on 8 October 2026 is "El Niño Advisory".
A normal year. Trade winds push warm surface water west towards Indonesia, and cool water rises near South America.
El Niño. The trade winds weaken and warm water spreads east across the tropical Pacific. Because the warmest water moves, so do the clouds and rain.
Rain shifts. NOAA reports more cloud and rain over the central and eastern Pacific and less over Indonesia. That shift in where air rises and sinks changes weather far away, including over India.
Why India cares. El Niño can weaken India's summer monsoon, but not always. In 1997, a strong El Niño came with a normal monsoon, according to IMD's record of El Niño years. Other factors, such as the Indian Ocean Dipole, also play a part.
The picture is a simplified illustration, not to scale. For the latest numbers, see our posts on how strong this El Niño is and what the forecasts say.
