Volunteer playbook: run a colony water-saving drive in Hyderabad

In short. Hyderabad's water is under pressure this season. The Telangana government has urged households to cut water use by at least 20% (as reported by The Hindu, 16 Oct 2026).

Painted colony volunteers seen from behind gathered around a water meter in a courtyard, above a six-step playbook: share the room, walk for leaks, agree the basics, watch the tanks, cover stored water and report back. Cards show the state's ask to cut water use by at least 20% and a note to reuse the room next time.

Hyderabad's water is under pressure this season. The Telangana government has urged households to cut water use by at least 20% (as reported by The Hindu, 16 Oct 2026). A colony drive helps neighbours do it together.

The six steps 1. Share the room. Tap Share in the Hyderabad Water Watch room (soshyal.com/r/7aftflsax9) and post the link in your building group. The link works on WhatsApp. 2. Walk for leaks. With your RWA, look for dripping taps, leaking pipes and overflowing tanks. HMWSSB has asked households to fix leaks immediately (The Hindu, 13 Oct 2026). 3. Agree the basics. HMWSSB's directions ban hose pipes for washing vehicles, ramps or roads and ask for dry sweeping for daily cleaning (The Hindu, 13 Oct 2026). 4. Watch the tanks. HMWSSB counts tanks overflowing with the pump left on as wastage (The Hindu, 21 Sep 2026). 5. Cover stored water. NCVBDC advises covering all water containers and tanks with tight lids so dengue mosquitoes can't breed. 6. Report back. Post what worked in the room so other colonies can copy it.

Next time. The official rooms stay open, so the same room and checklist can be reused for the next heatwave or flood.

The HMWSSB and state items are as reported in the news; check the Board's official channels for the latest rules.
