Pets and street animals in heat: water bowls and shade

In short. Heat is hard on animals as well as people. The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) issued an advisory in April 2024 on caring for animals in extreme heat, noting that dogs and other animals are vulnerable to dehydration, heatstroke and burns from hot surfaces.

Shade. Make sure animals have shade throughout the day, from trees, structures or simple shelters made from eco-friendly materials.

Water bowls and pots. Refill bowls regularly with clean, fresh water and keep them in shaded places, including near wells and handpumps. AWBI suggests bigger earthen pots with wide openings, or containers that cannot be easily tipped over.

Watch for heat stress. Signs include excessive panting, lethargy, drooling, a rapid heartbeat and collapse. Seek a vet immediately if you see them.

Spread the word. AWBI asks people to encourage neighbours to do the same. A building or street can share the job of keeping a few water pots filled.

Never leave pets in parked vehicles. The Health Ministry's heat advisory warns the temperature inside can become dangerous.

Working animals and the law. AWBI points out that the Prevention of Cruelty to Draught and Pack Animals Rules, 1965, bar using animals to draw vehicles or carry loads where the temperature exceeds 37°C between 12 noon and 3 pm.
