Heatwave signs: heat exhaustion vs heatstroke (as per NDMA)

In short. IMD expects above-normal temperatures in October over most of India (30 September 2026).

IMD expects above-normal temperatures in October over most of India (30 September 2026). Knowing the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke can save a life.

Heat exhaustion (NDMA): tiredness and weakness, dizziness and headache, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps, and sweating. Move the person to a cool place and give water. Get medical help if it gets worse or lasts long.

Heatstroke is an emergency (NDMA; MoHFW): a body temperature of 40°C (104°F) or more, confusion or delirium, seizures or coma, and hot, red, dry skin. It can be fatal.

Call 108 or 102 at once if someone has a high body temperature and is unconscious, confused, or has stopped sweating (MoHFW advisory, May 2026).

While you wait, cool them down (NDMA): 1. Move them to shade. 2. Loosen their clothes. 3. Put a cool, wet cloth on the face and body. 4. Fan them. 5. Give water or ORS only if they are conscious. 6. No alcohol, caffeine or fizzy drinks.

Prevent it. Avoid the sun from 12 noon to 3 pm and drink water often, even if you are not thirsty (NDMA).

This is general public guidance, not medical advice. In an emergency, call 108.
