Kids: a 7-day water-saving challenge with a tick chart

In short. Hyderabad is short of rain this year, and every family can help save water. Print this chart and do one small job each day.

A painted child seen from behind watering balcony plants from a small can, beside a seven-day tick chart of water-saving jobs: leak hunt, bucket not hose, sweep it dry, quick bath, tank watch, cover containers, and a family promise. A card says India's water-supply standard IS 1172 plans 135 litres per person per day for a city home.

Hyderabad is short of rain this year, and every family can help save water. Print this chart and do one small job each day. Ask an adult to help.

The seven days 1. Leak hunt. Look for dripping taps and pipes and tell an adult. HMWSSB, the city water board, has asked households to fix leaks immediately (as reported by The Hindu, 13 Oct 2026). 2. Bucket, not hose. HMWSSB's directions ban hose pipes for washing vehicles (The Hindu, 13 Oct 2026). 3. Sweep it dry. HMWSSB asks for dry sweeping for daily cleaning (The Hindu, 13 Oct 2026). 4. Quick bath. HMWSSB's managing director asked people to reduce shower use (The Hindu, 18 Apr 2026). 5. Tank watch. HMWSSB counts tanks overflowing with the pump left on as wastage (The Hindu, 21 Sep 2026). 6. Cover it up. India's vector-control programme, NCVBDC, advises covering water containers so dengue mosquitoes can't breed in them. 7. Family promise. Pick the habit you liked best and keep it.

Did you know? India's building standard IS 1172 plans 135 litres per person per day for homes in towns with full flushing.

The HMWSSB items are as reported in the news; check the Board's own channels for the latest rules. Share your finished chart in the Kids Learn: El Niño room.
