Drip and sprinkler basics, and where to find subsidy

In short. After a weak monsoon, groundwater and reservoir water must stretch further. Micro-irrigation, meaning drip and sprinkler systems, is one of the most direct ways to grow more with less water.

After a weak monsoon, groundwater and reservoir water must stretch further. Micro-irrigation, meaning drip and sprinkler systems, is one of the most direct ways to grow more with less water.

How it works. Drip systems deliver water through pipes and emitters to each plant's roots, so less is lost to evaporation and run-off. Sprinklers spray water like light rain over the field. The Ministry of Agriculture says micro-irrigation saves water, reduces fertiliser use through fertigation (feeding fertiliser through the water), cuts labour and other input costs and can raise incomes.

Which one? The right system depends on your crop, soil and water source. Your KVK or horticulture office can advise.

Government help (fact). Under the Per Drop More Crop component, the Centre provides financial assistance of 55% of the cost for small and marginal farmers and 45% for other farmers to install drip and sprinkler systems. Many state governments add a top-up subsidy from their own budgets. Assistance is limited to 5 hectares per beneficiary. This was stated by the Minister of State for Agriculture in the Lok Sabha on 12 August 2025.

How to apply. States run the scheme. Ask your district agriculture or horticulture office how to apply, which suppliers are approved and what documents you need. Applying before the dry season lets you use the system when water is scarcest.
